Beside guns and ammunition, cleaning solvents are indispensable for gun owners. You can easily find this gun cleaner in most gun store. However, a cleaning solvent is quite expensive and currently the price is also increasing quite fast. For that reason, many gun owners have started an intention of making a homemade gun cleaner. This is not a bad idea because it is cheaper and not less effective than gun cleaner bought from store.
Shooting is a very expensive affair. Therefore, the more money you save on gun solvents, the more money you can spend to buy guns and ammunition.
The most famous gun cleaner recipe on the internet is Ed’s Red from Ed Harris. Although Ed’s mixture can clean off dirt and debris, it is very flammable therefore should be stored away from heat sources.
To implement this formula, you need three types of chemicals:
- Deodorized kerosene K1 (It is usually used for home heating. You should choose the one with the least amount of odor.)
- Dexron II or III ATF (This is an automatic transmission fluid)
- Aliphatic Mineral Spirits
You can add acetone and lanolin to the mixture. While acetone makes the mixture work faster and removes plastic fouling, it will cause fumes if you use the mixture inside your home. Therefore, mix it outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.
How to mix homemade gun cleaner
Use a clean bucket to contain the mixture. All you have to do is pour ATF into the bucket. Use an ATF canister to measure the kerosene and mineral spirit. Next, pour those two chemicals into the bucket and stir until they blend into a mixture. Then store the mixture in a dry and insulated place. Place it as high as possible to be out of the reach of children. In particular, the garage is an ideal place to store your homemade gun cleaner.
How to use
Using this homemade solvent is basically the same way as using other gun cleaners purchased from store. The cleaning time of this DIY gun cleaner is not as fast as normal. That’s why you need to soak the gun in the solvent longer than usual.
Remember to keep the mixture away from the wood surface as it will cause damage if not removed. After cleaning the bore, use gun oil or lubricant to polish the barrel as you always do. Do not forget to run some dry cotton patches through the barrel once at a time until it is completely clean.
In general, making a gun cleaning solvent on your own is quite simple and not so dangerous if you have careful precautions. Before you start making the cleaning solvents, make sure that you will do anything to put your safety first. Because you have to use chemicals, you need to prepare a rubber glove and protective goggles. Also, be sure to choose a well ventilated and dry place to ensure the odor of the chemicals will fly off. After completing the homemade gun cleaner, pour it into an empty gas can and put it away from the heat source.
